Martin certainly has a lot of mass, but this doesn't mean he understands physics.

While I share the frustration of being unhappy with authors who don't finish their stories, I'm completely sympathetic with authors who (for whatever reasons) are no longer happy or fulfilled by writing anymore.

I'm glad he found something to write that engaged him, and I even think the topic is (or sounds like?) something that's important to an author's ability to do excellent world building. We've loved GRRM's books because he builds amazing worlds. I'm glad he's still finding joy in those exercises.

I wish he would finish the damn series that I've loved and already feel emotionally invested in - but frankly, he doesn't owe his readers anything beyond what he's already delivered; and all these people bitching about him and his work is exactly the sort of thing that kills the souls of writers.

I hope that GRRM finds enough joy from all of his other options in this world of endless opportunities, that he cheers up enough to finish the story he started in ASOIAF. But if he doesn't, then I don't want him to write any more about it anyway because life is to short to waste it by reading the ratings of unhappy old men... which coincidentally describes this comment, too.

The author of this is so disconnected. To him I say, “go write something as good as this set of books George has written. Feel the level of effort, the amount of time it takes to reach perfection of that magnitude. Don’t even reach it, just intend to write something as good and spend two hours a day doing it. For an entire year. Two years. And let’s see how it looks. It won’t be close so let’s add 3 more years. Still won’t be close… and so on.” Get a clue. Pray the guy gets these last ones to the same level of perfection as the others, before he dies, and if he doesn’t make it be grateful with what he gave us. And hope someone who cares that much comes along again.

People have started and finished series of books in the time since Martin delivered Dance With Dragons.

He’s done. The books aren’t coming out, the story will be unfinished, and it will end with a whimper.

If he cared, he’d have handed something in by now, but it’s easier to write scripts for the knockoff GOT prequel show or edit Wild Cards.

Writing himself out of the whole he’s dug himself into is harder.

He’s tapped out. It’s okay to admit it.

They’ve finished books of his caliber? What? I haven’t seen one. His was the last truly great work.

He’s an old man. This is likely the last thing he’s going to do before he dies. When people have wrapped up all they’ve set out to accomplish, or given up ever getting there, they soon die. I can understand the weariness he must feel in completing it.

I’m hoping he makes it. Because I want to read it. And I’m not going to be one of you making his last years a hell. Come on George, we love you. You can do it.

10 years ago the joke was he was probably going to die before finishing the series. 10 years have passed and it’s the same “joke” except he’s had 10+ years to have finished it.

Fair probability that he missed the point. Ergodic is a broad criterion. The author could have at least designated wide-sense stationary, for the stochastic process.

I read this paper a few weeks ago when it was posted on X.

I strongly suspect GRR Martin had nothing to do with this paper, except that the actual physicist used his something-something virus from one of GRRM's series as a teaching tool (the paper presents a way to solve a certain problem as a teaching aid).

I think GRR Martin is on this paper as an author solely for copyright reasons. Its more or less fan fiction physics. I can see some editor requiring it ("We need his name/permission so we wont get sued").

To be fair: I posted the same joke about GRRM martin when it first came out, but after reflection and reading the paper, I'd bet significant money GRRM did nothing here. Not even a word.

If there was nothing about rape in there he didn't write it.

No big deal. I've been trying to slog my way through the books but, I swear, it's hard. Half way through Storm of Swords and it's boring as hell. Too much unnecessary description. Too many characters. Like I'm really going to remember all these non-essential characters and the colors of their livery!
