Robert Kirkman’s Energon Universe has been a bright spot in comics over the last year, with hugely successful books, such as Void Rivals and Transformers, which have both great art and storytelling. When GI Joe properties hit, Joshua Williamson seemed to continue that trend with Duke and Cobra Commander until the end of the Cobra Commander series which signaled a change for the line to go woke like so many properties before.
"It seems they didn’t want to go full in-your-face with the woke..."
In other words, controlled demolition. This is why I advise people against the "move the needle" strategy because all the entertainment industry is doing is easing off the clown-world gas pedal when nothing less than ramming the car off into a ravine will do. Cleanse your life of nostalgia and FOMO.
I’m not a comic book / graphic novel person (more of a time thing than anything else). But with technology today, I think it would be badass if people started appropriating the properties and making counter-woke traditional storylines and characters. Sort of a subversive fan fiction movement.
I've said this once and I'll say it again: Skybound was the safe choice. Legit, I've felt nothing but boredom since October 2023. Transformers is a yawn-inducing retread with 'darker' themes, Void Rivals puts me to sleep, Cobra commander was decent until Issue 5, and Duke is the only good one so far.
Honestly, Hasbro should've given the license to Zenescope, Dynamite, Dark Horse, or even Merc Publishing. Image was a fine choice, but not really the riskiest. I want some new things, some new ideas, not Interconnected comic universe #5.
I'm sorry, I'm venting. I've just felt so frustrated lately.

That's right.

At this point the debate is whether to let the entire thing burn down and start over vs. salvaging what's left.

They've gone "full woke" in the sense that they released a grand total of ... one ... woke comic? This sort of rage baiting isn't helping.
Season 4 of The Boys has also succumbed. I lasted 3 episodes but won’t finish it.
