Superman director James Gunn has changed his position again claiming that putting out too many movies is what killed Marvel. This Substack is reader-supported.
He's partially right. Yes, too many movies - of the garbage level of tier.
But he has no sane way to grasp that every single one of those movies would've been a success if they were not cram-packed with social lecturing and Bolshevist ideology.
When is the last time a good movie came out of Hollywood? Second Hand Lions? Passion of Christ?
He is 100% right. All of the Marvel movies since "Endgame" were too many. Every single one. Also every show ever made for Disney Plus. And every Disney movie for about a decade or more were too many. And all their broken Disneyland rides were too many. Everything they have done for over a decade was too many.
Unfortunately, while films tapped into the energy and creativity of comics, they also fell into similar traps. People complain about reboots and so many origin-story films, but how many Spider-Man comic lines (for example) have there been - at the same time - each with slight (or significant) variations of the characters? The Marvel cinematic universe bought into the multiverse tropes, which effectively negate any serious consequences to stories, since you can just dip into an alternate 'verse. And they fell into the trap of complicated lore, cross-overs, and interrelated events - which comics nerds adore, but the general audience quickly gets lost; the general audience thrives on stuff like James Bond, where there may be a few developments, but the character is basically unchanged since Dr. No (or was, at least, before the recent messing with it) - heck, you could remake Dr. No line for line, and it would still be a viable film today.
And all that's barely touching the stupid "woke" meddling about with gender and race; the last few years (at least), nearly every male hero has been reduced to a joke and/or a simp - the characters who formed the core of the huge hits rendered obsolete...what response would one expect?
All that said...to my mind, the stupidest thing Hollywood has done is go full steam into blaming and insulting the audience. The most odious self-righteous finger-pointing crops up repeatedly in interviews and social posts, from individual actors, directors, and even studio leaders. I'm not at all surprised they have those attitudes, but one would think they'd have the sense to keep it to their private cocktail (or whatever) parties rather than driving away people who mgiht otherwise give them money.
He should be fuckin scared, he knows he's basically done after this movie bombs, which HE KNOWS it will. Wonder Woman will be cancelled or pushed back indefinitely after the Superman shits the bed at the BO.

Witness the destruction.

Methinks Marvel made too many terrible movies full of social justice garbage.
